Androgenetic alopecia or common male pattern baldness (MPB) accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. By the age of thirty-five, about two-thirds of men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss and by the age of 50 approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair. Approximately twenty five percent of men who suffer with male
pattern baldness begin the painful process before they reach the age of twenty-one.
However hair loss is mistakenly thought to be a strictly male disease. The fact is women actually make up 40% percent of hair loss sufferers. Hair loss in women can be absolutely devastating for the sufferer\'s self image and emotional well being. In our society, a great deal of a woman’s self image and sense of beauty is wrapped up in having beautiful hair. Consequently, the psychological damage caused by hair loss and feeling unattractive can be far more devastating in women than in men (this fact is often overlooked). There was a time when hair loss in females was classified as Androgenic Alopecia (MPB). However, we now know that female hair loss has its own causes and is classified as Female Pattern Baldness (FPB).
Female Pattern Baldness occurs all around the top of the head, and it\'s diffuse (ie. thinning) thus less immediately noticeable. Male hair loss, on the other hand is typically less diffuse and more concentrated in a single area on the temple, the crown, and the bald spot in the back. Another important difference is that while balding in men is almost always the result of a genetic predisposition coupled with age, in women, it can happen at any time.
