What is a breast augmentation? (silicone implants or saline breast implants)
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure for enhancing the size of the breasts using implants consisting of either saline (saline implants), or silicone (silicone breast implants). Breast augmentation is also called augmentation mammoplasty, breast enlargement or simply breast surgery.
Who is the best candidate for a breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is an aesthetic surgical procedure, and candidates are typically women who are not satisfied with the size of their breasts. Candidates may be women whose breast are not fully symmetrical or women who have lost a significant amount of weight or have had pregnancies and find their breast size has shrunken and wish to restore their breast size through breast augmentation. In some circumstances, your Mocelle Edan plastic surgeon may suggest breast augmentation accompanied by a breast lift for breasts that have become saggy.
How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?
Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that is performed under a general anesthesia. The introduction of saline filled implants allowed for a smaller incision, often less than just one inch underneath the breast and above the crease where it is well hidden. Some breast augmentation incisions are made by the lower edge of the areola, and incisions made within the armpit leaves no visible scars. After the incisions are made the breast augmentation surgeon is able to create a pocket, either on top of the pectoral muscle or beneath them, and insert the implant.
Will I still be able to have mammograms?
Yes. You should continue having mammograms after your breast enlargement surgery. Be sure to inform your mammography technician that you have had breast enlargement surgery so that they can alter the mammogram so your results are reliable.
Are Breast Implants Permanent?
No. All implants will eventually require removal and replacement. This may take 5, 10 or even 20 to 30 years. The actual duration will vary for each individual.
