Cosmelan® is a Depigmentation treatment which is used to treat melasma, and is based on the inhibition of tyrosinase, a basic enzyme in the melanin formation process. Several of the substances present in the Cosmelan® formula act by blocking this enzyme, or even by inverting the metabolic process of the transformation chain. Its principal action is the elimination of melanin patches on the face (melasma and chloasma). Cosmelan is especially good for medium fair to darker skins.

Melasma is a skin condition presenting as dark/brown patches on the face. Both sides of the face are usually affected. The most common sites are the cheeks, bridge of nose, forehead, & upper lip.

The precise cause of melasma is unknown. People with a family history of melasma are more likely to develop melasma themselves. A change in hormonal status may trigger melasma. It is commonly associated with pregnancy and called chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy.” Birth control pills may also cause melasma.

Almost every patient can expect a 95% improvement in terms of removal of the melasma blemishes.
After about a week of beginning your Mocelle® Edan Cosmelan® treatment, you should notice a significant improvement in your skin. By the time your treatment ends, the pigmented blemishes will have disappeared almost entirely. You personally will likely still be able to observe where the spots use to be – that’s because you were aware of it. However, others looking at you will no longer be able to see them in casual observation.

The process consist of two parts: First stage is applied at Mocelle® Edan MMD Spa: Basically the cleansing of the skin and the application of a yellow mustard color mask (Cosmelan 1). Your Mocelle® Edan nurse or medical esthetician will evaluate your skin type then cleanse your face and degrease the area to be treated. Immediately following the degreasing step, Cosmelan® 1 which is a yellow mustard mask, will be applied and left on for a total of 4-8 hours depending on your skin type. You will go home with the mask on.

After the action time has elapsed, you will remove the mask with water and a neutral cleanser and apply the mesoestetic® Hydra-vital factor K cream. Second stage is the Home Maintenance: It consists of the daily application and continual use of the Cosmelan 2 cream. The cream is applied three times a day the first week, twice a day the second week, and once a day the third week and on (or as directed by your nurse or medical esthetician).

If you have medium fair to fair complexion, you may notice that your skin turns red. If you have darker complexion, the same changes will occur but they may not be as evident. Also if you have sensitive skin, you may experience an itching feeling. Slight burning and tightening of the skin is also normal during the first 2 days, and sometimes slightly beyond. These symptoms can can be treated simply by applying an aftercare cream (ask your Mocelle Edan® professional for details).

After the third or fourth day, the skin appears healthy and luminous and the marks begin to fade.

However, flaking may occur on all skin types between the second and third day. Here again, application of a suitable aftercare cream can remedy this problem.

No, a TCA peel uses trichloroacetic acids (which are stronger than glycolic acids and penetrate deeper into the skin) to destroy and remove outer layers of the skin. Cosmelan® on the other hand is a depigmentation treatment with a light peeling effect and does NOT require anesthesia nor involves any down time.
