What Is Ear Surgery or Ear Pinning (otoplasty)?
Otoplasty is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure that changes the appearance of the external ear. It can involve a combination of moving, reshaping, adding, or removing structural ear elements. Otoplasty surgery can take many forms, including bringing the ears that stick out too far closer to the head (ear pinning), reducing the size of very large ears, or reshaping various bends in the cartilage.
Who are the ideal candidates for this procedure?
Healthy individuals who have an esthetically undesireable shape of the external ear can be a candidate for ear surgery. The procedure is performed on children and adults; young candidates for this procedure should be over the age of four. There are two reasons for this. The first is that the ears are almost fully grown by that age, and the second is that patients' generally cite ridicule and teasing from other children as their incentive to get the surgery.
What is the procedure like?
First, an incision is made on the back of the ear. Once the cartilage is exposed, it can be re-sculpted or folded into the ideal shape. Stitches are then used to hold the new cartilage shape in place and to close the incision. The whole surgery should only last about two to three hours.
Are the result permanent?
