What is liposuction (lipoplasty or lipectomy)?
Liposuction (also called lipoplasty or lipectomy) is a technique in which excess fatty tissue is suctioned from beneath the skin. Liposuction is used to contour the body by removing localized areas of fat (eg. Hips, thighs and abdomen area). Prior to surgery, your plastic surgeon will typically flush the targeted areas with a solution composed of lidocaine (a local anesthetic similar in its numbing effects to novocaine), saline, and epinephrine (a drug that constricts blood vessels to reduce surgical bleeding).
Your plastic surgeon will then use a cannula to breakup your fat cell deposits and then suction them out using a vacuuming device.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
Individuals who has already tried diet and exercise but have problem areas of excess fat in specific areas, such as hips and buttocks, thighs, inner knee, back, abdomen, upper arms, cheeks, jowls, breast/chest area, and waist. The desired liposuction candidate should be in the normal weight range and be physically and psychologically healthy.
Will liposuction get rid of cellulite?
No, liposuction is not currently an effective treatment for cellulite. Cellulite is occasionally improved somewhat by liposuction, but getting rid of cellulite is not a good reason to have liposuction. If cellulite removal is your primary goal, then non-surgical procedures such as LipiLoss are a better alternative.
What are the various medical techniques use to perform liposuction?
The most commonly used liposuction techniques are tumescent liposuction, ultrasound assisted liposuction, and power assisted liposuction. Tumescent liposuction involves the use of a large amount of saline fluid to loosen fatty tissue from muscle for easier fat removal. Ultrasound assisted liposuction, also known as ultrasonic liposuction or UAL, uses ultrasonic energy to break up fat prior to removal.
Will fat return after liposuction?
Liposuction removes the fat cells from specific areas of the body where the procedure is performed. The fat cells will not return; however, if a patient does not follow a healthy diet and exercise routine, the unremoved fat cells could expand and lead to weight gain across all areas of the body. However, the areas where liposuction was performed will have a reduced capacity for fat production. The key to long term liposuction results is the adoption and maintenance of a healthy balanced diet combined with exercise.
