A Neck Lift, or platysmaplasty and even sub-mental platysmaplasty, is a surgery designed to reduce the loose look of sagging skin in the neck area and under the jaw line. Some patients who complain of having a fleshy neck, "jowls", plastysma or neck "banding", or a "turkey waddle" can benefit from this procedure. Many times patients choose to have a neck lift with their face lift procedure. You must realize that the neck lift or face lift procedure is not designed to rejuvenate the area above the brow or around the eyes. If this is what you seek a brow (forehead) lift or blepharoplasty may benefit you. These four procedures can be performed in conjunction with one another for a complete transformation. You may also wish to have non-surgical skin tightening and facial rejuvenation.
Who is a candidate for a Neck Lift?
You may be a candidate if you have excessive, sagging or laxity of neck muscles and skin, a poorly defined jaw line or have lost your neck angle and are not ready for a full facelift. We can set up a consult with Dr. O'Neil to discuss the procedure and to see if you are a candidate.
How long will I be off work after Necklift Surgery?
You may perform most household duties the day following surgery but the bandage that you must wear for about week is unsightly. You will probably not wish return to work for 1-2 weeks.
Does it hurt?
Expect moderate discomfort. There is a feeling of "tightness" which may last a month or two.
Will there be scars?
All incisions leave scars. The unknowns are: where will the scars be, how visible, and how large? For a necklift, incisions are placed near the ears, so the small residual scars can be easily covered by your hair. If you have liposuction done under the chin, there’ll be a small incision there as well.
We’re all different when it comes to scarring, and it’s partly determined by our heredity. Some of us form small, faded scars rather easily. Others form larger, more pigmented scars. This is not easily predictable.
