What is Sclerotherapy?
The most common alternative to laser vein removal is Sclerotherapy (vein injections). Similar to laser vein treatment, sclerotherapy is a relatively affordable procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis. Sclerotherapy requires multiple sessions effectively treat any vein. Post-treatment therapy may include wearing support hose for two days to two weeks following treatment.
What is the cause of varicose veins and spider veins?
The actual cause of spider and varicose veins is unknown. They result from prolonged excess pressure on the legs or abdomen. Varicose and spider veins are more common in women, and seem to be hereditary. Some of the more common pressure inducers are pregnancy, obesity and standing for very long periods of time. Oral contraceptives can also lead to spider veins.
Should I get Sclerotherapy or laser vein removal?
If you have small to mid-size veins, then these can usually be treated by vein removal lasers (up to 3mm) very easily. Large to mid-size veins however should be treated with sclerotherapy (vein injections).
Will my varicose or spider veins be permanently removed?
Laser vein removal permanently removes the veins targeted at the time of treatment. However, there is no guarantee that you will not develop new spider or varicose veins in the future. This is especially true if there is a family history of spider or varicose veins, or if you become pregnant or take oral contraceptives.
